Classic Suzuki Cars – The Cappuccino

The Suzuki Cappuccino is a fantastic 2 seater sports car. It was built from 1991 to 1997 in Kosai, Japan. Exports to Europe and the UK were very limited. It is a really special car to own if you can find one.

The car was designed to meet strict size and weight restrictions so that it qualified for lower taxes and insurance in Japan. This resulted in a very light car, which weighed just 725kg. This means that the car feels much faster than it actually is. It has a turbocharged and inter-cooled DOHC, in-line three-cylinder, 657cc, 63 hp engine.

Its roof is a removal 3 panel hard top. The car can be driven either as a hardtop, a full convertible or a T-top. All three panels can be stowed in the boot, but you cannot put much else in there if you do this. The roof panels take up 90% of the boot space.

15,113 cars were produced at the Kosai plant in the first 2 years, 88% of these were sold in Japan the rest were sold throughout Asia. In 1993 the car became available in the UK for 11,995. 1,182 were initially made available to the UK market, they were all sold within 2 years. 1,110 were registered to UK owners, the remaining 72 were registered in other European countries. To meet UK regulations the car had to undergo 23 major changes.

Due to higher emissions standards in the UK the car was discontinued in the UK from September 1995. Suzuki had decided that the cost of modifying the design to meet the new UK regulations was too high. Prior to this decision a new model had been available in the UK with a lighter engine and chain-driven camshafts giving the car more torque. Power steering and an automatic gearbox were also optional extras.

Although not many Cappuccinos were sold in the UK there are still quite a few around. You can buy them in reasonable condition for 1,500-4,500. They can be costly to maintain, but are still good fun to own and drive as a second car. There is also an owners club that will help with finding spares and give you lots of helpful advice.
