Which Classic Car Is Right For You

Buying a classic car is a big step. Owning one can be a lot of fun, but buying the wrong one can give you some serious headaches and cost you a lot of money.

Start by considering why you want to own a classic car, if you want to travel long distances then a cabriolet version is probably not the right car for you. Make a list of your top ten dream classic cars, strike through those that for practical reasons will not allow you to use them as you would like.

Remove from your list any cars that you do not think you can afford to buy and run. Bear in mind not just the cost of insurance and servicing, make sure that you know how much things like exhausts and tyres cost. Parts for some classic cars can be expensive and hard to get hold of.

Visit a classic car show to see the car you think you want at close quarters. If possible try the car out, sit in it and ask yourself if it is comfortable for you and big enough for your needs.

Most classic cars need some specialist care, make sure that you have access to someone who lives close by who can do the work that is required. Owners clubs can tell you where to find the necessary mechanics and parts in your area.

Now that you have decided which car you want to buy it is time to start searching for one. Start by looking on-line and in specialist car magazines. You occasionally find classic cars for sale in local newspapers or shop windows. Most owners clubs also know of vehicles for sale.

When you go to look at the car you want to buy take a mechanic with you. Try to ensure that the mechanic is familiar with the problems that are common with that type of car.
